I read about an interesting notion in a sci-fi book relating to the question 'where are the aliens'. Supposedly whatever force that makes matter clump in these galactic lumps is similar or the same to the force that dictates where that matter clumping forms complex enough patterns to give rise to life. That is to say the life generating force of the universe has dispersed intelligent life more or less equidistant to each other thus mandating each lifeform to spend eternity alone. Barring some form of travel faster than the expansion of space between galaxies.
