I've always liked Chris Hedges (thanks Subroutine) and his book Empire of Illusion is a good read.
Spoiler alert it ends in a compulsive "optimistic diatribe."
I say that because the whole book an some energetic, caveat emptor about the force of pop culture and does indeed seem pessimistic.
Very much resembles Heideggers views about the state of technology and how contemporary cities worship inauthenticity. And he commented on such in the 40's.
