Raising the petrol prices so much above the rest of europe was an idiotic move. something had to give, especially in "strike champion country" france.
I would be in favour of abolishing all car tax and only tax fuel, so those who consume the most pay more. This would have to be an EU wide endeavour, though.

What do you want to tax then? Only luxury items? Arguably a car is a luxury item. People commute because it is cheaper to live outside the city, cheaper still when far away from public transport. You either pay extra for the petrol or for a place close to work or at least public transport.
If you are self employed petrol is an expense you can deduct so it comes off your tax bill again.

I've no idea besides adjusting corporate/income tax rates. I thought this movement was about not taxing the working/middle classes though.
