Germany: Suspected WWII bomb explodes leaving crater in the countryside

A bomb thought to date from WWII exploded in an open field in Limburg-Ahlbach in Hesse on Monday, leaving a wide crater in the ground, as confirmed by police.

Residents heard a loud noise and the earth trembling at around 3:50 am on Monday morning, when the blast occurred. Upon going to the field they discovered a 10-metre wide and four-metre deep hole.

"There was a dreadful banging at four in the morning, I can't describe it but I'll never forget it. It was so strong that the floor underneath me quaked. I looked around and didn't see anything," recalls resident Willi Weisser.

According to local police, the bomb probably ignited itself by a long-term detonator.

On Monday, the area was examined by an explosive ordnance clearance service in order to find possible fragments, a police spokesperson reportedly said.

The unexploded device was among many still thought to be scattered across Germany, 75 years after the end of the Second World War.

From the video's thumbnail I'd say the aliens are getting less subtle with their crop circles.
