As someone who's never held a gun, if I came into possession of a thief's gun, what would I need to do so that when I pulled the trigger I could fill him with bullets?

For you, non-firing options would have a higher success rate than trying to fire - your question alone justifies my statement. Think of all the other options you might try like running, hitting them with the gun, disposing of the gun and grabbing something long and hard to swing. Compare this to pulling the trigger and finding nothing comes out because the safety is on, a mistake that may cost you time. Time that you could have successfully executed something else.

Dude (Old Spike)
there is a little latch on the left of the handle :) push that forward and pull the slide all the way back and you are ready to fire just squeeze the trigger while aiming down the sights and it will go bang, if it does not grab the barrel and use the handle as a blunt weapon
most common safety

most common pistol is a glock. no safety other than not pulling the trigger. pull the top slide all the way back and let it go, it snaps foward loading one in the chamber. pull the trigger over and over again while saying something dope

You say that... but in the picture, I see a "side lock". I assume that's the "safty"?

you shouldnt see "side lock" you should see "slide lock" when the magazine is empty, a part inside pushes that slide lock up catching the slide open.
the glock only has 2 safety's. 1, keeping your finger off the trigger. 2.the trigger has a middle part, it needs to be pressed in flush along with the rest of the trigger for the gun to fire. without it being pushed in flush the rest of the trigger cant be depressed

What GKhan said!
If you live in the US go to a gunrange and try shooting a handgun, it is fun but you will also see that it is hard to hit a target with a handgun if you have not practiced in a stress freee environment, then imagine handling the thing in an emergency.......
