fired for wrongthink should absolutely be illegal. if she's posting fliers and sounding off with a megaphone at work then fine, but what people do on their own private time is their own business. people work 8 hours a day, not 24.

Just so I am clear, Bill Mahar got his career cancelled by the right way back for saying something to the effect of terrorists have kids too. Which was a stupid thing to fire him over, not a stupid thing to say.

Indeed, Dagambit, it'll be interesting to see if he remarks on this. Recall that he recently almost got cancelled again, when he made his house-n-word joke. He barely escaped intact, so odds are he'll be staying quiet, just like Gina's co-stars did.

A valid point Sato, but I'd side with Daf on practial grounds. When I rolled over to professional salaried status (as opposed to hourly) and as the social networks gained prominence, they'd always add a clause in the contract about how if it's deemed that your online presence reflects negatively on the company or goes against company values etc. this can be grounds for termination. While most of us would accept that it's a bad idea to belong to any hate-groups, I have to admit that the recent push by certain alt-left types to cancel anyone who doesn't jump (with both feet) onbard with their every cause-du-jour is worrysome. Wrongthink indeed. Maybe grandpappy knew what he was saying when he said that it's impolite to discuss religion or politics with strangers. But then again, grandpappy laughed at stuff like this.. yes and i'm saying those clauses are bullshit and need to be ruled illegal. you're employed or contracted to do a job, and companies don't have values. sure companies are afraid of losing revenue as a result of boycotts, but that's the problem. stamp this shit out properly so that nobody is under any illusions that the quality of a company has anything to do with what their employees believe.

You speak the truth, but do you speak the truth-truth, my friend. It's about marketing a brand. Companies insist that they are all about values. We care. People first. Blah-blabedy-bla-bla. And as such, they can expect you to be like minded as a steward of the company. And you can appreciate their not wanting to have to fire and replace people everytime a client brings something controvercial to their attention; especially in the age of cancel culture. It's bad for business. Don't get me wrong, I'm not dismissing what you say. It's just the new reality. I can tell you that I frequently get contacted by new business associates on LinkedIn and I find it annoying. Folks in other professional circles will even reach out to eachother on Facebook. Erm.. no thank you. Just cause we work together doesn't mean I'd like to share my professional (or social) network with you. I'll plead ignorance i.e. that I don't go on often enough, etc. and that's why I missed your invite. Here in America, the line between your personal and professional life is definitely blurred. It's definitely cultural. I like that the French president (talking about previous pres, Francois Hollande) can have a mistress while in office and his constituants remain unphased. Old ladies in the street would say, what do I care, that's his business. Ah... Paris... don't get me started. Anyway, I agree with you but it's not gonna happen. So best to try and keep our nose clean.

I just cancelled my subscription account. You should to. Just go back to pirating or using illegal mirror sites. I had no problem doing so for the last 15 years. I will gladly be keeping my 15$ per month.
