How else would they vent the heat if they didn't have an exhaust hole? Putting a piece of plywood over it would just heat the wood up or trap it until the death star overheated and then what would happen?

Sure, sure. But you really feel that adding an exhaust port that leads directly (straight line) to the main reactor AND wide enough for a torpedo was the way to go? Why not set up a cooling system using oh, I dunno,.. the absolute zero temperature of space? Planet-killing turbolazers are a hobby of mine, so let me know if you really want to do this. ;-)
I also toyed with 'you must be fun at parties' as a response.
