To what end? Baiting an attack on Bakhmut?
They haven't had time to set up proper Defenses. If anything i think its a prime spot for a counter attack in the first place. So they are probably legit scared of the Ukrainian "counter-attack" happening while they have low ammo/ shit tonne of casualties. The VDV is on the southside racing to take whats left of bakhmut before Wagner does, just so they get bragging rights? With all this crazy shit going on, either Russia is bigbrain-10 steps ahead or Putins world is about to fall apart.
