The fake thumb is key. I had people losing it with this one a decade ago. The magic circle doesn't care about giving this one away because it's actually obvious. The hobo magician does a good job of using misdirection, the art of the conjurer.

He wasn't punched in the head from behind, shot, stabbed, mugged..... If anything, that was their best behavior.
