I know the guy in the red was a bit too close to the robber, but why in the fuck did the first Samaritan run into melee range so they guy could grab his weapon. It's a firearm, a *ranged* weapon ffs, if it wasn't for that second guy that could have gone horribly wrong.

Yep, his action could have easily backfired on him, pardon the pun. Now let us disregard firearm licensing for home protection for a minute and just look at concealed carry permit, one of which both of the customers obviously should have:
Before issuing a carry permit the person needs quite extensive training. The incompetence of the guy in the black shirt could have easily led to injuries to or deaths of people other than the perp.
