1:05 That creepily innocent little laugh from a traumatized adult reveals how fucking deep this guy went to portray madness.
Like... I know I've seen this guy somewhere walking around in real life.

Right?!? Holy shit this looks good. The relationship with his mom, dealing with mental illness, trying to fit in, and finally snapping.
The shot showing his notepad where he's writing down jokes tells me the direction they're taking with this is so much more involved than anything Ledger did. the child-like handwriting, the innocent cheesy puns that he probably thinks are funny and the devolving into it becoming a diary where he's venting about having a mentil illness. All of that was covered in just a couple of seconds.
The whole rumor that he killed himself because he was too into the Joker is bullshit. It was good for the time, but it's aged. Phoenix is an infinitely better actor than Ledger and I'm super pumped about this. I hope it's dark as shit.

That Patch Adams reboot looks like they're going for a much darker tone.

I can't put my finger on it, but something feels very wrong about this film. There is a disconnect somewhere that removes my ability to empathize with the character.

are you supposed to empathize with him? Maybe the intention is to make you feel put off by him or unnerved. That's how I felt. No empathy at all except maybe the beginning with his mom, but that was more pity than empathy. Then I just got more and more creeped out.

Yes, I believe we should empathize. The BEST villains (And the joker is among them) need a story that makes you pity and empathize.
When writing a character, a happy character typically has a handful of reasons as to why they are happy.
And unhappy character usually has a multitude of reasons as to why they are unhappy.
The one thing I saw that nailed it is the note. "The worst part about having a mental illness is people expect you to behave as if you don't" That is pure genius. The things I disagree with are men in suits (Supposedly successful) are wasting their time beating the crazy person. Delinquents have time for that. Successful types don't even bother.
The other thing that urkes me a bit is how this story is portayed. The acting is brilliant, and it catches moments of brilliance. But this feels more like "American beauty" Than the inception of the joker. Perhaps bad marketing?
I will still see it. But I will watch with caution.
