I'm joining the masses in finding it harder and harder to enjoy a series where the protagonist in season 1 is now the villain.

personally i don't find that a reason. people naturally respond and change according to what they've experienced and what they are experiencing.
my reason though is that it's so slow moving. they've got an end point and decided to take 10 episodes to get there, end they just end up having to fill half of that with fat.

Fair point,..but some of that fat took on the form of excellent side stories, eg. the the episode told entirely from the perspective of the Native American host, Akecheta.
