tl;dw: it's gone from innovative and different to standard fare, like i think pretty much everyone has noticed.

I haven't seen anyone jumping through their ass to submit something better.
"Innovative and different"? OK, let's be different. Instead of, say, the hero's winning, just end the show with everyone dying in glorious battle and the Knight King turning the entire world into fucking Zombies.
That would be different, that would shit on the fantasy tropes that everyone is bitching about it. That would show em'.
Except that wouldn't be "innovative and different". That would just be a Twilight Zone ending. Or we could go back even further and find fucked up endind in Grimms' Fairy Tales.
Nothing is new. Everything has been done already.
Everyone seemed to be chomping at the bit for the Dragons to finally make it to Westeros and begin kicking ass. Now they're in Westeros and some fans are bitching about it.
I actually watched this before it was posted here. I think this guy's problem is that the series is coming to an end and he doesn't want it to end.

That is part of it - people who were obsessed with Lost and other shows expected some grand satisfying meaning to be revealed at the end of the series. When that didn't happen they were upset rather than alarmed at how invested they had become in some TV show.
That said, from the very first scene of season 7 the show seemed different, like Martin was barely involved in advising at the lower levels. He probably just provided them with the equivalent of an outline, and then they did their own thing. So instead of trying to capture or adapt magic from the books they are now trying to create their own magic based on a skeleton. I can tell, but it's not the end of the world. My thing is that I would like at some point Tyrion takes a dragon high into the atmosphere and for the briefest of moments we get some kind of tantalizing glimpse of the world from above that answers some questions many have about its cosmic and temporal physicality while raising additional questions to deepen the mystery. But that won't happen.
Perfect endings are very difficult to achieve - the Dark Tower book series did it with a brutal ending that truly was the most perfect for the epic. Breaking Bad did it. TNG is argued to have done it.

I would say that The Next Generation did their farewell perfectly, but at the same time that series went on far too long (and it gets even more cringey when you consider the "action" movies they released based on TNG). Picard was the "face" of the show, it involved every single notable character in the show, it was definitive, and everything they did mattered.

except it didn't, because every major character always survived. whatever happened only ever mattered to others, often so egregiously that the "red shirts" trope was born from star trek. yeah i know yar died, but one character in over 150 episodes is the exception that proves it.

i agree everything has been done, but it's a matter of scale. a twilight zone ending, or grimm... thinking about it i could add the original V maybe, but that's about it. avoiding typical hollywood-esque heroic saviours and against all odds revivals would at least set it aside in a far smaller pile.

I think breaking bad would have ended better if Walt killed Jesse.
