i don't think there's any counter-argument against that this is a thing, but the question is why? is it age-old anti-intellectualism? or egotism? or something else?

It's the inevitable outcome of the Nietzschean dilemma gone unresolved. When nothing has value it opens the door to all kinds of horrors and not even Nietzsche could imagine that a monstrosity both nihilist and totalitarian could form out of this soup. But here it is.
