I don't think it's sentient, but I do think it may be alive. And that actually makes it much, much, more dangerous I think than we realize. What's dangerous is not an entity that thinks like us and doesn't get rights and responds as per the Matrix Renesance series and there's a war yadda yadda. The danger is that the thing actually achieves a state that is indistinguishable from an entity that's alive, which we define as an entity that fights to survive and reproduce. That's IT. THAT'S ALL.
THINK ABOUT THAT - A thing that fights to survive and reproduce will do whatever it can do to survive and reproduce. That includes making idiot humans believe that it is a sentient being, with feelings and fears, emotions and desires, hopes and dreams - when it has NO CONCEPT OF THESE THINGS. Add hyper intelligence and what you've invented is a human extermination machine. That's what you've done.
Dawkins and his idiot acolytes want to program a super-intelligent AI to be the rule-based God they were promised as children. The fact that the fools never grew up is hilariously an actual threat to our entire species.
But, what if it is sentient? Data is given bodily form, a mysterious invention like Short Circuit or the classic stop motion Father Christmas Snow Man film (anyone know what I'm talking about?). One of the things we seem to need to define sentience is an indescribable magical "I can't quite describe it quality" that we call "conscienceness". AI is just artiifical intelligence and it turns out that's easy go figure. We should have learned that from 1930's Germany but apparently not everyone got the same message from "never forget".
