100% pure fantasy, agree. Put the Akido master with anyone other than their own, respectful student, especially a bulldog with cauliflower ears and they're very quickly in line for a rude encounter with reality. I think there are YouTube videos on this.

Aikido is just the softer, non-violent form of Aikijutsu. Aikijutsu never became wide spread because it taught bone-breaking, ligament tearing techniques, along with strikes, that were meant for battle and post war Japan was moving towards non-aggression. It's like comparing modern sport Judo to traditional Judo to it's origin of Jiujitsu. Even "original" sport Judo is alot more violent and damaging than modern sport Judo. The modern martial arts have been made to fit whatever venue it is ttrying to entertain. Aikido just happened to be picked up by a bunch of peace loving hippies.

Understood. But that's just down right embelishment on the part of the student, again in revernece for his master, that leads to a false sense of power in the latter. See below (especially the humility served at the 3mins mark)

I was invited to an Aikido class by a friend and as a Judo/Jiu Jitsu practitioner, I found there to be a lot more similarites than differences. His teacher never sold Aikido as anything other than a mental, spiritual, and physical excercise that also has some self-defense applications. I attended multiple classes (with no intentions on joining) and saw him interact with some new students, where he taught them to always try to deescalate a confrontation, and if needed to apply Aikido in a way to take down an opponent in order to escape. I returned the favor to my friend by invinting him to visit Japan with me, where my cousin, who is also an Aikido practitioner, took us to the Tokyo headquarters where one of the last living students of the founder of Aikido was giving a demonstration. He found out we were visiting from the U.S. and after he found out I was a Judo player, invited me onto the mat to try and take him down. He was 70 some years old and quite a bit shorter than me and I was in my late 20's and in my prime. Having been taught by a 62 year old former Judoka olympian, I knew he would know if I held back. I did not hold back but it did not matter. When I thought I had gotten him off balance going back, I went for a hip throw, which he soundly stopped with a palm strike to my hip and followed it with a very uncomfortable under the neck/jaw strike and foot sweep. Since then, I do respect Aikido and what it teaches, though I also do see many limitations to the art as self-defense program without the more traditional Aikijutsu techniques incorporated.

Thanks phyto for sharing a first hand account. That'll count for more than I or anyone above said, to be sure. And your last sentence about the additional limitations you ssee, now that you'll be even more experienced in martial arts, is pure gold. With the prevalence of MMA in the sports amphitheatre theatre today, we're lucky to live in this interesting time where we see the pros and cons of many of these beautiful and ancient arts manifest as they're mashed up and put up against one another. Really cool.  Cheers.

Aikido aka Bullshido isn't an ancient art, it wasn't even a thing before the 20th century.

Thanks professor. Indeed, my fault if I wasn't clear, but I don't see much room for the patience required for the  practical application of Akido in MMA. See also bulldogs and cauliflower ears, above.

The real secret to the Aikido is that they get all the students to submit to them and their bullshit.  That's what it's really about.
