i still have my g1 optimus prime and yes he does transform just like the cartoon.

fun fact: transformers were first a japanese line of toys. in japan they had a tv show too, but here they don't have commercialization laws so the show was about the toys itself. that wouldn't fly in america, so they had to make up a story for the transformers to be in to be able to be legally broadcast.
it's kinda weird here in japan actually how blantantly the kids whos are selling toys. they even say straight out "buy some cards and have fun playing!" and show you how to play with whatever they're trying to sell as part of the show itself, not just a commercial in between.
