You demonstrate once again how little you know about Christianity. The Old Testament was Jewish Law. It functions more as a historical account to Christians. Also as you read through the old testament As generations turned away from Gods law their societies were overrun, butchered, and enslaved by the very things God commanded to wipe out.
Furthermore, very few walked close enough to God to cast out the demons that compelled people to these sins.
Jesus changed that. He is the Son of God, and demonstrated the casting out of spirits, and through his sacrifice he did away with old law, and brought forth God's new laws, and with them salvation.
After this point people could finally have a personal relationship with God directly, rather than rely on the Sanhedrin to communicate with God on behalf of the people. This relationship with God grants you the gift to deliver people of tormenting spirits if that is your calling. That is probably why the death penalty was no longer required, because people could be healed from the source of the wickedness and torment.
Paul also warned of a few things that come with it. If you are not living as a clean vessel, these spirits can harm the deliverer, and if the victim does not accept salvation and repent after deliverance, the demon will return with more stronger than itself.
Christians live by the new Testament as Jesus said I have come to do away with the old teachings and provide the new way of God. Which by the way was one of the main reasons the Sanhedrin put him through a kangaroo court and crucified him.
