The argument that a parent must punish their kids as part of their educational process is flawed, though, and this has nothing to do with over-protection. Completely different story.

Your argument may apply to humans training canines, but human children can be a lot stupider than their pup counterparts. A dog (mother or father) growls at their pups and they stop and sit up quiet. Petulance is a uniquely human feature so punishment (including quiet time alone or here, spend 5 mins getting back off this counter) may be needed to have the lesson stick.
You're basically adding a line of code, a cost/benefit analysis in the mind of the child around the undesirable behavior.

Do tell us how your lord and saviour Hitchens (or uncle Duckie) informed your decision that never punishing your kids is the way to go.

You shouldn't rule out physical punishment as a tool to teach, you shouldn't use it as a standard i agree but if a kid refuses to listen you punish it with a beating and tell it not to cry and go to it's room, you should never let your kid piss over your head or it will end up becoming a Karen or a Junkie,
i have seen it happen, parents that don't control their kids they go to the store, kids ask can we have cola, parents give an almost apologetic NO, kids walk up the fridge in the store open a bottle and drink it, parents do nothing but look tired.
Those kids will not get anywhere in life.
I would have beaten the crap out of em, listen or else and don't nag too much or youl get some right now.
That is how i was raised and it works.
It depends from bloodline to bloodline however, just like dogs humans can be Bull Terrier or Gray hound or Chihuaua or Bulldog or wolve or Pitbull............ so many different bloodlines each with their own character traits, though same species, some you don't have to set straight, others try everything.
