Pressure change in a closed system

So, because of the air being lighter/less dense than the water, and has nowhere to go, and is compressible, it can hold the weight of the water up, reducing the pressure?  

It's like the suspension on a car, with the springs on the wheels holding the chassis up.

I wonder if this is related to the way barometric pressure works in our atmosphere.
