Nice.

I have the same ultrasonic cleaner as the carb guy.

 

What is disappointing to me is the sequence of starting the engine. I hope they changed the oil and filter beforehand but I would have checked at least the cylinders with an endoscope and run a compression test before trying to crank it with new plugs.
I also would have fitted a brake booster while repairing the brakes.

Agreed.  But If I have an engine that's sat for a while I always do a piston soak before attempting to turn it over.  After sitting for that many years you can pretty much guarantee the rings are stuck and probably some valves too.  I used to pour a little seafoam or MMO into the spark plug holes to soak the rings but last time I used Berryman's B12 and if it wasn't so hard to find where I live that's what I'd use everytime.  I've had several old 2 strokes with poor compression brought back from the dead with a piston soak.  Free's up the stuck ring and perfect compression again.

Ys, all good ideas. I did not want to moan too much in my first comment but did you also wonder why they did not change the rubber fuel hoses in the engine compartment but rather waited until they failed? They seemed professional when dealing with the carbs so it does not really make sense, does it.

Speculation on my part, but presumably older cars have value in "original parts" so any removal/replacement would have some resale implications?

Of course, but let me assure you rubber hoses from a car that hasn't been used in 40 years are not part of this. Just imagine the leaking fuel would have sprayed on a broken HV lead and ignited......
