The ice is more of a problem than the cold - for this to happen the rain has to fall wet and then freeze - the temp at ground level is just below freezing, so it's actually not too bad. Just really slippery, and the danger of falling branches is very real. Kills pets and people during these storms sometimes.

makes sense to me since it's unseasonably hot in australia. a number of heat records were broken this month and last. climate change pushing the extremes further in both directions (but extremes of heat more than extremes of cold, hence "global warming").

There's nothing particularly extreme about this weather. Temp is a bit lower than normal, warm air came in, it rained and the water froze on the ground. Like I said in the vid we had a storm much worse than this in 1998 (I mistakenly said 1997 in the video). In fact this winter was pretty standard all around from my perspective at least.
