So they had a great handling prototype with a great engine that could have been made road going with a few tweaks but decided to only put the engine into an existing, already ill handling, E-Type. And then designed the rather bland XJS.
It is really not surprising why the british motor industry started going downhill fast just a few decades later....
Oh, and there was the Austin Allegro.... My first car.
