If civilizations need fossil fuels in order to become advance civilizations it could explain why we dont see any advanced civilizations out there in the galaxy. Coal was just a fluke, for only about 50 mil yrs there was nothing to break trees down. What if an advanced civ came BEFORE mass extinctions and epochs of hundreds of millions of years in which crude oil had time to form. Fossil fuels might not be common on worlds with life. If we didnt have fossil fuels would we be advanced? Or doomed to repeat the rise and fall of civs like the past many thousands of years? To get pre-coal you have to go back to the early 1700's to 1600's. Was that time much different than Roman times?
