heard from someone in the know that it's not done to somehow reduce the artistic license of bands playing on totp or whatever, but because they have a couple groups playing one immediately after the other on the same night it's just logistically impossible to incorporate all their gear too, with all the sound checking etc that would also be required. it had to be done in advance so it was all good to go on the night.
