True story. [Not mine but a very nice summary: 'Possibly one of the most honorable stories from WW2. Franz StiglerΒ was a German fighter pilot. Called to intercept an American bomber convoy he found an isolated and damaged one flown by Charles Brown. Stigler remembered his flying instructor telling his group that if he ever saw or heard that one of them shot at a man on a parachute, he would kill them himself. Seeing theΒ shot-up bomber he felt this was basically the equivalent.'Β ... 'This only worked, Franz escorting Charlie over the Atlantic Wall, because the Germans had captured B17s in their possession. Seeing the 109 flying in formation with it, twice (not once as shown in the recreation) kept the AA batteries from firing at Charlie's B17. The gunnery commanders assumed this was a clandestine operation.']
