Hi all,
Well as i mentioned at the end of “working toward a new spiked” that announcement thread was getting somewhat long and therefore locked. Thus! We have a new thread to use and i’d like to start with dans current tweaks and upgrades to the site.
So far we has:
- Submitted content now displays the Block Quote content properly
- enabled <video> tags in comment
- Styles within the wisywig editor now work for those who are CSS-savvy (eg. image width/height in the image properties dialog)
- Front page is now less clunky with a better caching mechanism. Reload time is massively reduced.
Upcoming /possible new features:
- Show any links & a bio on your page
- See a user's previous posts more easily from their page
- Leave comments on a user's page
I’m sure i missed something so dan may edit this or just add to the thread.
Peace out!

I'm just going to blurt this out here. This is a self sufficient business model:
What if Spiked had a fixed subscription cost, 50% of the subscription cost get's waived if you submit at least one original contribution (audio, video, photo) that makes it to the top 10 item for at least a full hour within the month. Then, at the end of the month, the gathered proceeds are distributed 50% for site maintenance and staff, and 50% for the Top 10 content creators. The vote is on share quality, but also on original content. So a good linked youtube video might get 5 votes on quality, but a 1 vote on authoring (since it was essentialy linked and no real effort other than time spent on curated video selection). Top 10 items are selected based on a formula that gives authoring and quality 50/50 weight, so basically a good youtube linked video would get a maximum of 3 final points, good original content could go between 3 and 5. Anything under 3 gets removed from the list after 15 votes, just like it's always been.
Voters are also celebrated, and analyzed: content quality and originality vote count, number of comments, and vote/comment ratio (to ensure you're not just a commenter, or just a voter) all combined give you a voting power factor. Comment upvotes/downvotes don't affect this factor, to avoid censorship on unpopular opinions: comment votes really just affect what people...think about your comment ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Finally, to avoid any confusions on money balances, the whole thing is designed with Ethereum smart contracts.
Thoughts?

By the way, I just cracked open my third beer, so I'm SURE this model is full of holes. Just know that this is possible (I don't have near the skill to pull something like this off, so don't look at me) and this is definitely a v1 that is fully open to criticism. But I think it could really encourage content creators to flock to the site, and people (like me) who just like to comment and vote, and don't have time to create or explore content, are happy to pay a monthly fee as long as it helps keep the cogs turning on this beautiful site. Does that make fucking sense you horrible fucks?
(Old Spike)
And before you come in and say that this is what steam.io does, hey fuck you. We're just trying to have some fun anyway. What are you? 40? How much longer do you think you're going to live? And just so you know, after 70 it's not considered "living" anymore. Fucking... adult diapers

I've donated a few times, but seriously nobodys gonna pay to visit this site. Veterans maybe, but how are you gonna get fresh meat in here.
(Old Spike)
You're saying that a meritrocratic system that pays for content, sourced by content viewers and voters won't attract new meat? Ads are so 2010. Make money flow from content viewers to content creators, add a curating process in the middle. Boom... cash flow.
(Old Spike)
I'm going to break this to you guys in case you haven't realized yet. People do things for money. Youtubers expose their lives and thoughts for money. At some point down the road, once the cash flow is constant they start saying shit like "this is my passion" "this is my destiny, to talk about video games or expose my family to the internet".
(Old Spike)
The overheads are next to nothing & it wouldn't generate much ad revenue since traffic isn't high enough so it's not really a commercial enterprise, the way I see it. I'm just the coder but I can't see how involving money is a good idea.
(Short Spike)
Tagging on from the end of the last announcement, is VN okay? Not seeing a new gallery in 2 months is very unusual.
Re donations, how about a middle ground and going with something like Patreon? I'm not an active poster but still frequently visit the site. I like the set-it-and-forget-it approach to monthly donations best, rather than 1-offs.
(Old Spike)
Patreon could work actually - good idea.
(Short Spike)
I think the best way to permanently fix the weekly galleries is to actully have people submit links directly to the site as a 1-off or batch. Then these get added together and posted as a batch job every Friday night (or somthing)

just an update about spammers.
they turn up every now and then. dan and i keep an eye on it deleting anything we find that is spam. dan is looking into further protections and may impliment something in the future.
if you see spam let us know and we can delete the associated account. but if it's in this thread or in the polls don't worry we'll find it.
(Old Spike)
I'm wondering if the colour scheme could be improved...
A couple of drafts have been created that you can sample yourself if you install the Stylus plugin & go here.
Here's a screenshot of option draft 1 & 2:
If you know CSS, you can edit the source if you install it. It's pretty easy to upload & share your tweaks. Or you can just make suggestions, even if they're along the lines of "Youtube's dark theme is good" or whatever.
(Old Spike)
I like left one better. I have no knowledge of CSS so won't go into that, but I'd like even less clutter in the main page:
+Create Content
+Content Explorer: Videos / Image Galleries as the only two tabs (instead of Top Rated / Popular / Recent)
+My Account
+Search
My two cents & great work!
(Old Spike)
Also, I can't seem to comment in Polls anymore. I don't know what the rest think, but I never did consider Spiked to be a NSFW webpage: maybe we can make it so that Gifs are softcore-only moving forward. I used to love the stories Flynn would put together with great music, pretty sure everyone else did.
(Short Spike)
Im also 3 beers in and......ahhhh forget it.......
(Old Spike)
The Big Lebowsky is such a great movie
(Site Administrator)
ah that trinity graphics, they won't be posting anymore.
(Old Spike)
Please guys, can we have a button "report as spam" on the submission. I see it only on comments (or I am simply too dumb).
Look at this shit:
https://www.spikednation.com/videos/get-your-deeply-penetrated-tattoo-easily-removed-laser-therapy
(Site Administrator)
you can report it here for now like i said above. dan is looking into measures.
taken care of and ip banned :D
thanks for reporting!
(Old Spike)
good work guys!
(Old Spike)
Another spammer in this topic:
https://www.spikednation.com/videos/free-thinker-infiltrates-trump-rally
(Old Spike)
Sometimes i cant submit certain video's i get this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCuvmapmOp8
it has flame icons in the name of the video is that it??
and yes i took the embed code of it
(Old Spike)
Evidently the column 'filename' at row 1 has an incorrec string value, which has generated classical general error 1366 in the Hybrid Sql State. As a result no file was uploaded. You should read a bit before asking silly questions.
(Old Spike)
well then read this - je moet je kanker bek houden vuile teef :)
(Site Administrator)
ok from my understanding critikal made it so the same video can never be posted twice. there was text to that affect however me thinks updates changed it to that stuff. i'll ask dan to have a look.
(Old Spike)
Hi all can't seem to add content (video) comes back with an error message:
When trying to up this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYEYcDza0PI
(Old Spike)
I think it has to do with the smiley in the title everytime i try to up someting with emoji's it fails
(Old Spike)
You can now embed Bitchute videos into comments & the content of videos.
How you do it is just grab a random YT video embed code & paste into the source within the Spiked editor.... then replace youtube.com with bitchute.com & replace the video ID with the Bitchute video ID. You end up with source that looks like:
<iframe width="789" height="444" src="https://www.bitchute.com/embed/qMbXJzvniqPe" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
(Site Administrator)
i'll have to try that.
thanks dan :D
(Old Spike)
Sweet as. If people wanna be able to upload Bitchute as regular video submissions that should be possible but it's a bit harder to get working. There are a couple of videos on Bitchute I wanna upload but not enough to warrant it yet.
(Old Spike)
It appears I can't see the latest poll although I cvoted on it.
Thanks all for keeping on improving the site.
(Old Spike)
Layout has been tweaked, it now stretches wider to fill large screens.
(Old Spike)
rip connect 4
(Old Spike)
I just logged in for the first time trough my phone and the recent video's section displayed old ones
(Site Administrator)
Yeah just hit 'recent'. The section you're in has a cookie that goes stale after a time. Phones & cookies are a bitch.
(Site Administrator)
Images in posts/comments now scale properly so no longer become distorted on small screens
(Dixie Normous: Image specialist)
I get this error when trying to post a video
(Old Spike)
does the title of the video have a graphic in it?
(Dixie Normous: Image specialist)
Nope. The error comes up when I try to add the video link.
(Old Spike)
post the link
(Old Spike)
That happens when there's a strange character in the title of the video.
You have to find another copy of the video that doesn't have funny characters.
Judging by that error message, the offending character is:
(Dixie Normous: Image specialist)
Ah yeah there is, thought Sal meant in the title that I typed in.
