wouldnt the US imposing tall these tariffs actually cause the US to have to rely on producing their own goods? ...and is that a bad thing?

paradoxically, it isn't. official unemployment figure is 3.6% which is historically low, but wage growth is below the rate of inflation, which isn't possible if there's actual competition for employees.
