(28 Apr 1978) There was a dramatic end to a bank siege in the Austrian town of Linz when police shot down a masked gunman as he emerged from the bank with two hostages. None of the hostages was injured in the thirteen hour siege, the only casualty being the gunman himself. He was taken to hospital with what police described as "heavy but not serious" injuries. He was hit from close range by a shot-gun blast as he attempted to escape, forcing two men hostages to walk in front of him carrying explosives. The gunman was apparently attempting a bank robbery on his own, and police dismissed his subsequent claims to have links with terrorist groups

After triggering the silent alarm, Walser brought 22 customers and employees into his control, thus taking the first hostage-taking in the history of criminals in Linz. A 27 million ap euros scheduled for this day had already been delayed at the time of the attack and had now been re-reducted by the police. Walser negotiated with Interior Minister Erwin Lanc, among other things, and released all female hostages. After 13 hours, Walser resigned with two hostages, which he had joined together by means of ignition-free explosives packages and cables, and tried to reach an escape car, but was struck by shot by a police officer and arrested. In a backpack he carried 3.5 million öS from the bank. For the first time in Austria, a hostage-taker was stopped by use of weapons
The policeman's projectile had penetrated Walser's right-hand blade and injured a cervical vertebra, causing a partial spinal cord injury. He died from suicide before his trial
