We have a manual brake rollercoaster here in Finland.
Not as old as this, was built in the 50's. Looks pretty similar to this but bigger.
Part of the fun is that there always a chance that the brake man will have a stroke or something and you go off the rails.

There was a fairly good chance of the brake man dropping dead.
This old geezer had been doing it for 37 summers. Retired in 2012
