1983: SEAT BELTS become COMPULSORY | BBC News | Retro Transport | BBC Archive

I never wore a seatbelt for a very long time as a friend of mine was killed in an accident because he wore one. The A pillar hit his head in a straight on collision with a drunk driver. Of course I was young and stupid then, ignoring the fact that he would have been killed with or without the pillar hitting his head. Also my very first car can be seen at 1:45, an Austin Allegro, what a pile of shit!

To improve road safety seatbelts for the driver should be banned and a 5 inch sharp spike should be fitted in the centre of the steering wheel.

I remember trying to convince family in Europe to wear their belts in the late 80s and early 90s. The biggest complaint was that they didn't like the stifling sensation of the belt holding them down. I explained that that's only a thing for a week or two and that your body gets used to it (kind of how you don't feel your clothes). Sure enough, they all came round eventually, and agreed.
