Part of the reason Sumer is largely ignored IMO is because Christianity heavily influences our culture. We're implicitly taught that Babylon was where civilisation began because of the bible. A lot of the stuff in the bible - eg. the great flood, the creation myth - was just copied from Babylonian myths & the Babylonians lifted it from the Sumerians.
Sumer lasted ~3,000 years whereas Babylonian Empire lasted ~40 years, it was a kingdom for about 1,500 tho.
Sumerian civilisation is one of the most interesting. Their gods & legends are wild & they had some super advanced technologies like electric batteries. It's a shame it doesn't get more attention.
