Carrier battle groups and strike groups are not going away anytime soon. US carrier strike groups have a LOT of defencive capabilities most of which are not publlicised or downright tippety top secret. Keep in mind that the US keeps orbital platforms above their carrier groups and fast attack and special purpose subs beneath them. Speculating on the capabilities of those is a fascinating topic indeed.
