They are so polite! Title says this visit is a surprise but I have my suspicions. At one point you can see what looks like an old water hole that has dried up very close-by. I'm thinking this visit was no surprise.

yeah it's probably a tourist spot, not just random pool and random elephants. the ground looks well treaded, so the elephants probably regularly walk through that trail, and you mentioned the water hole in the background. someone set up that pool just for this.
