No matter how safe the system is, 100% oxygen in a planes cockpit is just fucking scary to me.
Didn't they learn anything from the Apollo program? 3 astronauts fried in a matter of seconds.

Pure oxygen being the only way to correct for keeping up your O2 saturation in a low pressure environment, sadly.

Breathing "normal air" from a mask wouldn't work?
I'd assume the pure oxygen is good because it gives you more time to use the mask and smaller tank for storage.
