They are only good for home defense if the person using them is a very good shot AND can remain cool in an emergency situation like a home robbery AND is able to fully awake within split seconds from deep sleep AND has immediate access to the loaded gun. Anyone who has ever tried to hit a small or moving target with them knows that.
You can take away the "good shot" requirement if you use a short barrel shotgun, just make sure your loved ones are behind you.

tell you what, if that was used for home defence by the time you've dumped the first mag and slammed in a second one cunt's would be running away at full pelt. no one in their right mind would want to go anywhere near that amount of fire power.
personally (if i could defend my home cause in australia you can't) i'd have have a pump action of some description with a wide beam torch attached and a set of ear muffs slung over the top cause, you know, even a .22 is loud enough to damage your hearing outside let alone indoors

Are you prepared to fire "a mag full" of warning shots inside your home, just to make a point? I they see a shotgun pointed at them you generally don't need to fire at all.
Even in the US you will be prosecuted for owning an illegal fullauto weapon, btw.
I agree with the shotgun "strategy" though. In most countries you can get a hunting license which probably will include shotguns (at least here in spain they do).
