Has he actually mentioned this? 'Cause this was all I could think of when I saw the spaceman in that Tesla :)

Total conjecture. :) But he would have been about 10 when this came out and likely popular during his younger movie watching years. Outside of this being Musk's idea specifically, there are some pretty strong similarities so I wouldn't be surprised if this was part of the inspiration for the idea.
