what's the point of these checkpoints? i thought the border patrol or DHS isn't allowed to detain anyone who refuses to answer, so no one has to answer. and if a driver just says they are a citizen, even if they're not, then what? and if they're not a citizen, maybe on a student visa or a tourist, what do the border patrol do next? or can the border patrol start searching any vehicle if they can claim the driver looked nervous when answering the question? or is it that once a driver answers the question, the officers are allowed to do what they can to verify the answer?

pretty sure they're for justifying budget and getting votes. people want more done on controlling the border, the guy in charge has these things built and staffed, and gets the votes from people who want better border control.
