The guy in the video is from SCMP, a HK outlet... HK has their own media situation outside of mainland China. Freedom & human rights in HK is superior to most Western countries, particularly the US who likes to preach the loudest.
If you wanna talk about China's digital sovereignty & FB/Google being blocked there that's another can of worms. It was a smart move IMO. It's just a shame more countries don't do it.

Some of those stats might be actually true, but hard to say as they censor so much stuff (but I know, that a good thing and other coutries should follow suite).
I work for a company that imports stuff from china. One of our sales contacts was also saying there's only a few covid cases in the area...We all had a good laugh about that and said the red-play-book is strong in this one.
I also had to sell to the same business contact a VPN subscription so he could actually use google to do some research. The guy was super excited when the internet open up for him but also seemed a bit scared at the same time as he knew he wasn't supposed to use it. Maybe it was just all the porn that opened up to him.

accusing them of lying about their covid cases is just a cope & isn't supported by any evidence, or their actions if you've watched closely
Right now they have Xi'an locked down, it's a city of about 13 million. Nobody's been allowed to leave since they locked it down, similar to the Wuhan situation but they caught it earlier this time. They had around 168 cases today, 66 of which were imported & the rest were community spread - all within the restricted zone of Xi'an. The cases have been going down for roughly the past week & it seems like they're beating their first Omicron outbreak. NZ is also been able to get on top of our Delta outbreak, finally but hasn't had a serious Omicron outbreak yet. I don't think we can stop that one if it gets to 100+ cases per day.
You can't fake what they're doing. There's too much footage of people doing stuff in public, unrestrictred. Kids in schools with no masks for instance -- there's no way this would be happening if there was the slightest risk of infection, that's not how they roll. Mask use is still heavy there in public spaces but there aren't many mandates, not even a vaccine mandate. It doesn't add up if you look at how seriously they deal with the testing/quarantine stuff & then say "they're hiding something". If they were trying to hide something we'd know. Not necessarily thru western mainstream media, there are other channels. But mainstream media would sniff it out & be shouting from the rooftops if there was funny business going on. They tried to do it even when there wasn't, pointing to shit like mobile internet subscriptions & urns in early 2020.
You gotta remember there's tens of millions of Chinese people overseas who have family members there & it's not like they don't communicate. I know lots who I talk to regularly & things there are fine in every province I've heard about, I also have a few contacts there who say the same thing. It was 2-3 months of restrictions in 2020 and since then it's been fine, other than a couple provinces since then who've had outbreaks like Xi'an is having rn. It's not a black box that you can hide something like an out of control virus.
I can't comment on some rando who uses the western internet. Using it for the first time would be a bit of a trip I guess. You should point him to infowars.com & tell him it's for real just for the lolz. They have their own version of everything there & really don't need foreign platforms. Mainly they wanna talk about Chinese celebs & shit like this, they have their own entire entertainment industry that's pumping out loads of stuff. I like that they're developing their own culture in parallel rather than get flooded with Western shit like everyone else. Hopefully they never try to do K-Pop type stuff for export to western market, that would be tragic.
