JRE with Steven Pinker

have been watching this on and off when i have time, nearly an hour in now.

i'm surprised by their objection to anonymity. the people shouting down pinker (and others who dare to say anything new) aren't hiding behind anonymity, they're proud of themselves and their righteous bashing of the "hate". on the other hand, if pinker had made his comments anonymously, those outraged would have no-one to direct their anger at, no-one to try to have fired or really any way to "punish" the speaker at all. anonymity enables trolls, but their mindless "you suck, why don't you just die" type comments are easily skipped, and those with something meaningful but contentious to say can do so in safety, and society can advance since backward-thinkers are hindered in their efforts to suppress speech.
