When I worked at LOEB, a grocery store, we had live lobsters and one day a lobster rights lady poisoned the tank to "put them ou tof their misery" because the store didn't feed the lobsters. Sometimes, if no one bought lobsters at the expected rate, they would begin to starve and would start eating themselves. This bothered me as well. My solution was to steam the oldest lobsters during such times and eat them myself - I'd say they were about to die anyway, which wasn't far from the truth.
