I wonder why they the NFL doesn't require neck braces that would prevent over extention of the neck like that.

I think the NFL needs to go the other way and have softer pads. Same issue in hockey over the last 20 years. The padding has grown harder and harder and become weapons instead of protection. It allows people to go into contact harder and with complete disregard for the possible consequences. Look at a sport like rugby. When you go to hit, you have to hit smart. When you're going to get hit, you have to protect yourself. No pads. Injuries sure, but not career ending injuries.
