Neil Tyson - I'm no Atheist

He's right that words are defined by how people use them but I still see it as a bit of a puss out to let anti-religious people who call themselves "atheists" redefine what the word atheist means.

Just like with Christianity, the mass of just regular Atheist people out there haven't made a collective effort to reign in the people giving the brand a bad name. For example, what the fuck is a "career atheist"? Matt Dillahunty is a "career atheist" who spends his time bringing Christian fundamentalists to tears to the applause of an audience of traumatized former Christians (like it's a fucking support group or something). The Christians out there who focus on the archetypes and explore the deeper meanings don't do much to reign in the idiots on the Christian side. Even Jordan Peterson doesn't push that way - at all. It's one of the criticisms I will present in the next vid I upload to my channel but I have one I'm just finishing that's gotta go up first. It's my biggest one yet, and it's about how my channel was almost deleted off YouTube by a think tank called the Aspen Institute who didn't think I'd challenge them legally. They backed off but I lost three weeks of YouTube work because I had to lock my channel down while I waited for them to sue me and now everything is behind.

Every time I listen to NDGT I learn something, he is a remarkable man.

The word atheist should be eradicated from the dictionary as it sort of implies similarities to "being member of a different kind of religion" (admittedly some behave like they are). It also has a negative ring to it (like non-smoker for example) when it actually only should be a statement without evaluation.

Like danmanjones said above way too often atheist is is confused with anti-religious (as also the religious can be anti religious towards members of other sects).

One is either a theist or one is not. It is like other definitions, you are either a smoker, drinker, driver, pilot, philantropist or a mix of those or you are not. Nobody would answer the question "are you a doctor?" with "I am an 'adoctor'." They would say I am an engineer, teacher, roadworker or whatever, OR simply say, "no, I am not".

Perhaps we would do better to use words properly.

I'm an atheist and I'm not anti-religious until someone is anti-freedom in my face. Which is usually only because of religion or due to religiously held beliefs.

Fuck the copout cowards that let the opposition define the words of you and then you GO WITH IT! How many christians believe the word 'christian' means retarded, ignoramus, stupid, wishful thinker, heretic or whatever the fancy word for 'wrong believer' is, etc? Practically none right?

NDGT is probably a closet christian.

Well everyone was a christian back then else they would fucking kill you in the name of their all loving god and this implies that most of the scientific work was done by christians. The calendar problem would have been corrected in some way or another even without jesuit prists working on the problem, it was just part of the natural growth of science.

Dude - there are so many opportunities you should have had in your life thus far that would have indicated to you how incorrect that statement truly is: I mean, even if you have only a passing familiarity with history you can't possibly believe this statement. How does a person arrive at the point where you have arrived believing that statement is true?
