Well, the Parliament in catalunya decided to make this an "official" vote rather than an opinion poll, quite a few technicalities were, hmmm, let's say not quite clear or properly thought through.
The conservative spanish government decided to not having it and, rather than relying on the decision of the constitutional court (which of course already HAD declared the whole sharade unconstitutional beforehand) and get into a pissing contest, again showing the insecurity of their conservative leaders, which sort of backfired.
They should have let them go through with it, laugh at the catalan "politocal leaders" and arrest them for various crimes committed in the process (the spanish law is pretty unambiguous about this) including (of course, lol) embezzlement of governemnt funds (they also encouraged the mob "taking hostage" of a judge and his investigation team).
In the end they were of course arrested (minus puigdemont and a few others, that quietly left the country and let their peers take the hit, what a character this cunt is).
Re-elections were held and the whole thing has quietened down and people, I think they will revert to utilising the legal process to enforce their independance (a vehicle that actually DOES exist in spanish law).
In the end this utterly foolish exercise has cost a lot of money and future revenue, especially for catalunya but also spain as a hole.

If it was one dickhead cop's fault that would be less worrying. But of course it is more than that. It is more about the difficulty of finding and punishing said dickhead cop when the system seems to be on his side. On top of this, you get this stupid war on drugs, most of it for profit and the rest of it because of learned behavior. There is wrong or right. At one point in time, people just accepted that black people were inferior to white people. They behaved accordingly. But even then it just felt wrong to many.
It takes time but it seems humanity is mostly moving in the right direction. This shit will get fixed.
