I just started watching The Orville only on Epsoide 5 and I find it meh. Huge fan of TNG and DS9 and STV I thought was good but not great. The Orville so far seems like its trying too hard, the acting is subpar so far(wil let this pass as all of Star Trek's first season seem this way). The jokes seem forced or just not funny but did chuckly a couple of times. The effects sometimes looks like 90s CGI. The story lines so far are ok. The charcters seems very one note so far.
People seem to like it so I'll keep watching and see if it gets better, But right now I dont see anything special about it.

100% agree. The problem I have with the show is that's it's not silly enough. It's literally a weak TNG episode with the odd divorce / sex joke tossed in from time to time.
The characters are way too similar compared to TNG. Bortus IS Worf, Isaac IS Data, with just very (and I mean very) slight tweaks.
They could have had way more fun with it. Joked about cliches, broke 4th walls etc. It's just 95% a mediocre TV show set in space, 5% out of place jokes before you forget you're watching a comedy.

yeah i think they can't have it both ways. since it feels like an imitation, it either needs to be strong in comedy, or else strong in the imitation. if the imitation is just OK, but the comedy was great, then it's a great parody. if it was a great imitation, but the jokes weren't that good, well at least we can enjoy the story. otherwise if both halfs are mediocre, you can't take the story seriously, and you don't often laugh at the jokes. kind of like The Last Jedi.
on the other hand, something like the stargate franchise, they had a bunch of corny jokes or running gags, but it was OK becaues they had an original setting and characters to support the actual plot.

It's OK, not great. Humor is so-so. Sci-fi is so-so. But I don't have much else to watch.

i've been enjoying it, especially since about episode 7. it's not really a parody, a comedy or sitcom, or sci-fi, it's a bit of everything. i think you'll enjoy it more when you think of it as just "a show" rather than trying to put it in a box and judge it on your expectionas of what should be in it.

But it's TNG. It's like... exactly the same. I'm suprised they aren't being sued.
