My guess is it would be nitrogen or another cheap gas to create a hypoxic atmosphere. Studies basically show that hypoxia is the most pleasant way to go.

Hopefully carbon monoxide. Much more peaceful than nitrogen.
Actually, is that true? I think it is. I think nitrogen would cause a suffocation reflex.

The suffocation reflex is from carbon dioxide. My understanding is that most gasses that create a hypoxic atmosphere and are not toxic make a pleasant death. People that commit suicide frequently make 'exit bags' that they run a supply line to put an asphyxiant into. I saw a documentary a while ago about the most ethical way to kill livestock and it sounded like hypoxia was the way to go.
