The problem with open plans

Open Layout Homes Have A Surprising Problem - Cheddar Explains

Never understood why people were so enthusiastic about open plans anyway. Who doesn't want to watch tv, study, cook, work etc in space where you're not disturbed by other activisties and you aren't disturbing theirs? Can vouch for the energy savings too. My place i designed myself has lots of small rooms )which also gives you more walls which are useful for putting storage against), and my energy bills are about 60% less than the apartment i used to live in even though it's 3x more space.

Open plan has its advantages when you have small or oddly shaped rooms. Our livingroom and kitchen are not small but long and narrow, so both look small and are not very useful spaces opening up a part of one wall to the kitchen and sharing the gained space for a dining arrangement made a huge difference.

Of course the extractor fan will now suck some of the heat out of the living room. One could use a high quality circulating filter / fan arrangement for this though.

I don't understan why americans and canadians like their cathedral style entrances or living rooms, though. All the heaat is trapped under the ceiling...
