Upon estimate we wouldn't accept a client that acts like you.
We are booked solid for two years and have to refuse new jobs, we drop any client that gives us any attitude whatsoever.
See in trades we are in complete control. If you can't do it yourself, you're screwed without us. If your roof leaks, your million dollar home falls apart in record time. You need your roof redone about every 20 years depending on climate. And if someone else is willing to put with you, we really couldn't care less. That's their problem.

I wouldn't exactly call you an employer. That implies you are my boss. You arn't. At all... You need something from me. I tell you how much it's going to cost you. I show up when I want, I leave when I want. I take the day off when I want. I shove a retarded amount of waivers in your face that you will sign if you want the work done.
If you want to come up and watch me work you are going to use your own ladder not mine. If you say something I don't like I can terminate the contract at any time for any reason. (It's in the waiver)
If your property is not well maintained or there is even a dog turd in your yard I'm exempt from cleanup (It's in the waiver)
If you think that calling the ministry of labor is going to get me, we have ways of dealing with them, and we deal with them regularly, because of "do gooding" brown nosers.
So, the next time you want to talk down to a tradesman that is there to fix a REAL problem in your life, or before running your mouth about things you don't understand, like what a safety shoe is. Go get some coffee and cookies instead, say please and thankyou, and make sure the payment is in order.
For every homeowner that acts like you, there are 100 more that graciously provide offerings of food, drink, and sometimes their wives and daughters to us as an alternative.

Nice "professional" work ethics: "I show up when I want, I leave when I want. I take the day off when I want. I shove a retarded amount of waivers in your face that you will sign if you want the work done."
You see here we use roof tiles that do not need to be regularily replaced by default and put them on a structure that will last the lifetime of the (in most cases brick or concrete built) building, so we do not have to rely on people that have no work ethics or pride in their job like you.
As a CUSTOMER I need to ensure I employ a competent contractor, someone walking over my roof in shorts and without safty gear most definitely isn't. I will not employ someone who wants to "shove a retarded amount of waivers in your face" and "shows up or not (probably depending on their state of intoxication), lol. As an EMPLOYER I have a duty of care and need to comply with regulations, if these regulations do not include mandatory safety gear then there is something seriously wrong with them. Even if there are no regulations a competent employer should not only insist on employees utilising safety gear but also provide it to them.
Cowboys like you are around everywhere, though, especially in a tourist area like the one where I live, hence I do most of the work myself and only employ people that come recommended by trusted sources and most definitely not botchers like you, that on top of it all think they are god's gift to the world.

I don't think you know what a competent contractor is. In the end what matters is does your roof leak or not (There are many good practices that contribute to this). Does it go in straight or not.
Btw we have saftey gear thanks. We use our own judgment when it's needed. If your working a 12/12 or a mansard that's different.
If it's a walk on bungalo It's a bigger tripping hazard to have it around. The number one cause of falls is tripping on clutter and lines.
As a client the only regulation you have to comply with is if daddy lets you do something to what is supposedly "your" home.
The rest you just use as an excuse to but into other people's business and tell them what to do. (Big surprise there)
Like I said, we wouldn't accept you just as much as you wouldn't accept our contract and we would both be happier for it.

again lol. I worked as a senior project manager for large (several million) projects in the UK for quite some time. Hence I know what a competent contractor is, dear. One thing I can tell you with 100% certainty, though: you are not, I even doubt you have your own company.

Don't get why they still use shingles.
Instead of doing your roof every 20 years or so metal roof will easily last your lifetime and is pretty much maintenance free.

There is a number of reasons. First is expense. Now does it make the most sense to invest more now to save long term? Yes. But, many homeowners can barely afford to get their roof done at all.
We handle many roofs in very poor condition because they waited so long. Whether the shingles crumble on touching, or complete resheets from erosion. Often bad quality work done by the guys before us too.
Another reason is homeowners are selling and they just want a new roof to present to buyers.
Another less common reason is aesthetic. Some like the look of shingles better, or *Shudders* cedar shake. Even the rare customer prefers 3 tab over architectural.
