Lower estimates I have heard is donbass had about 60'000. And so far it looks like they will lose.
If they don't tactically withdraw the majority of those troops they are likely to be annihilated and the morale of the fighters in the whole nation is in danger of total collapse.
Might take months and losses, true. But that is the current strategy. A slow careful grind of ukrainian men, ammo and food until they disintegrate. Leaving much of the infrastructure intact so the nation will have value once seized.
I can't say a word against the bravery of fighters regardless of their beliefs, sides and problems. They are playing war. There is something to be said. But From what I can see it's pretty much decided, the question is how many more have to die before that is admitted. Russia isn't really hurting, it's economy is stabilizing. We however are hurting very much and the screws are getting tighter.
Even the msm is silent on the possibility of Ukrainian victory, and are now just talking about "how many we took with us."
Not a winning attitude, but for lack of a better term, a face saving and excuse making attitude. The battles you lose don't matter, and men expended don't matter if you win the war and can maintain security and recovery afterward.
If the individual men fighting really believe they will be enslaved if they lose, and would rather die then live in that world, then I say that is fair. I would feel the same way if pressed with belief in that outcome.
