the older i get the more i appreciate the bravery of strapping yourself onto the end of an absolutely massive partially-controlled explosive and using it to shoot yourself into space at speeds above 20,000 kph.
it's all done by a huge team of very competant experts, but it's still a very seat-of-your-pants type thing. for example it needs to be covered by a sound-dampening system during lift off because the acoustic energy of the launch would be enough to cause a rupture which would make the whole thing blow up.
